More city venue choice for Plymouth bereaved

The bereaved in Plymouth will have more choice of city venues for funerals and memorial services in the future.

For those who do not want their service to be held in a church, the options are quite limited at the moment beyond the two local authority crematorium chapels at Efford and Weston Mill.

Local Civil Funeral Celebrant Wendy Coulton wants to raise awareness about the availability of the Victorian chapel at Ford Park Cemetery for non-religious funeral and memorial ceremonies. She is also identifying other appropriate venues in Plymouth for this purpose.

Wendy says: “The restored chapel at Ford Park is beautiful in its simplicity, has wonderful acoustics and it is a flexible space which can be personalised to reflect the wishes of the bereaved.

“Visitors often express delight when they come into the chapel for the first time – it really is a hidden gem. It would be lovely to see more people discover this special building and experience the warm, professional hospitality offered by the staff and volunteers at the cemetery.

“Just as there are now many more options nowadays for people to choose from for civil weddings to take place, I believe there should be more choice available to the bereaved for funerals and memorial ceremonies to reflect the changing tastes and wishes of the deceased and their families.”

There is a second chapel at Ford Park cemetery which is a heritage visitor centre with modern hospitality facilities where up to 40 mourners can have refreshments or catering served before or after a service.
